The ultimate appetite suppressant. The "sure thing" strategy for losing weight. Almost sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Pfizer didn't think so: they spent $32 million just for the rights to a patent on chemical compounds they could extract from hoodia. The plan, of course, was to create the next blockbuster drug for treating patients who are overweight or obese.
And that's a lot of people. Nearly 2/3rds of adults in the United States are now overweight. Almost a third are clinically obese. |

Guarana also increases mental alertness, fights fatigue, and increases stamina and physical endurance. Guarana is taken daily as a health tonic by millions of Brazilians. In the United States, guarana holds GRAS-status (Generally Regarded as Safe). In 1989 a patent was filed on a guarana seed extract that was capable of inhibiting platelet aggregation in mammals. The patent described guarana's ability to prevent the formation of blood clots and to help in the breakdown of clots that had already been formed. |

Most of the reports involved adolescent girls or young women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one who were using appetite suppressant drugs containing PPA—just as Katie had.
Intracranial bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke) is a rare occurrence in this age group. Could it be possible that a drug that had been on the market for nearly sixty years could be this dangerous? In addition to these published reports, the FDA admitted that between 1969 and 1991, the agency had received an additional twenty-two reports of hemorrhagic strokes associated with the use of PPA. |

And in 1973 the FDA also approved fenfluramine as a single drug, with short-term use as a prescription appetite suppressant.)1
Patients literally flocked into my office wanting to be placed on the Fen-Phen drug program for weight loss. They all claimed to have friends or family members who had successfully lost weight using these drugs, - and they wanted to try them, too. Call me
Drug interactions actually pose old-fashioned, but I've never been a fan of a much more serious threat than using diet pills as an effective means of even the unknown side effects of weight management. |

But it wasn't the miracle appetite suppressant I was hoping to find. It just honestly didn't suppress my hunger enough for me to call it a miracle-class supplement.
Your results may be different. I have no doubt that some people are losing weight with the help of hoodia. But at the same time, I can assure you that nobody is losing weight with hoodia if they aren't simultaneously making better food choices and engaging in some form of physical exercise. |

He said that somebody noticed that sometimes antihistamines make you nauseous and decided to fudge some tests and pass it off as an appetite suppressant. Also, he thought the product was probably unsafe because it caused drowsiness, and extended use is not recommended.
I told him I would never do anything like that. "I do not sell products that do not work or are unsafe. Furthermore, I can't believe that the federal government could be involved in such a blatantly immoral scheme. |

REPPED: This is part four of our investigative report into Hoodia Gordonii, a natural appetite suppressant herb. As part of our investigation, we interviewed hoodia growers and suppliers, learning that con artists are hard at work trying to ride the current wave of hoodia publicity. When there's money to be made fooling people, you can bet someone will step up to the plate and start selling counterfeit hoodia at a premium. One hoodia source, I've been told, is selling ground up tree bark as hoodia powder. Another is selling plants that aren't even the right species! |

Although there's nothing in the research that shows hoodia to be dangerous for people who wish to experiment with this appetite suppressant, there's also nothing to show that it's 100% safe for everyone.
This isn't a traditional Chinese herb that has thousands of years of medicinal use to back it up, for example. It's not something that comes with a convincing amount of evidence for long-term use by indigenous cultures. Even the San tribesmen only used it sparingly. They weren't taking this herb every day like many Americans plan to. And what is the safety of this herb for pregnant women? |

The first step mandatory to marketing the bread was to have documented tests that showed it was indeed an appetite suppressant. We knew it was. It worked for us and many of our friends. We first tried going to testing laboratories and were very surprised to find that there were few, if any, who specialized in this sort of testing. Secondly those who were willing to look into it were talking astronomical figures in the neighborhood of $500,000 to a million dollars. That was totally out of line. I had my degree in psychology, so I was well versed in statistics and testing. |

REPPED: This is part five of our investigative series on hoodia gordonii, a natural appetite suppressant for weight loss. I spent $1,742 and over a hundred hours investigating the hoodia industry, ordering products, and interviewing hoodia product providers. What I've found is that many companies claiming to sell hoodia are actually selling counterfeit products.
But there are also trusted sources. |

It is used as both an appetite suppressant and a fat burner, and appears quite harmless.
Fat Blockers
The most popular "natural" fat blocker is chitosan, which is derived from chitin, a complex starch found in the exoskeleton of shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, and crabs. Like Xenical, it can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and phytochemicals, very possibly doing more harm than good.
Laxatives
There are two main types of laxatives: bulking agents and stimulants. Both are commonly used in herbal weight loss formulas. |

Used by thousands of years as an appetite suppressant by the San tribe in South Africa, hoodia seems to turn off the human appetite. Your hunger drive just vanishes. You simply don't want to eat. And the pounds fall off without even trying.
The magic bullet has arrived, it seems, and everybody who has heard about hoodia suddenly wants some. Yet there are hucksters and con artists at work. Some are selling worthless products. Others are exaggerating or mislabeling their ingredients. It's a dangerous market and, of course, entirely unregulated. |

Fenugreek
(Trigonella foenum-graecum)
Also Known As: Greek Hay, Foenugreek
The name Trigonella is derived from the old Greek name denoting "three-angled," because of the form of the plant's corolla. The English name fenugreek comes from foenum-graecum, a Latin phrase meaning "Greek hay," the plant being used to scent inferior hay. |

Hydrocitric Acid (HCA): This is the active ingredient extracted from the sour Indian fruit garcinia cambogia, which Ayurvedic healers have used as a natural appetite suppressant for centuries. Marketed under the tradenames of Citrin™ and Citrimax™, as well as HCA, it is non-habit forming. Some studies suggest it can reduce caloric intake by as much as 10 percent. For best results, take three 500-750 mg. capsules daily, half an hour before meals—in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise regimen. |
| HCA (hydrocitric acid)—a natural appetite suppressant.
HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate}—sports supplement; builds muscle, decreases fat.
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)—similar to tryptophan; a natural alternative to Prozac™; suppresses appetite; helps alleviate depression and promote restful sleep.
IHN (inositol hexanicotinate)—a "no-flush" niacin; helps prevent heart disease by lowering blood triglyceride levels and raising HDL (good cholesterol) levels; may enhance memory.
MCP (modified citrus pectin)—a carbohydrate found in plant cell walls; can slow down the spread of cancer. |
| TYROSINE: Improves sex drive; helps alleviate stress; can act as an appetite suppressant and mood elevator.

| Moderate to intense exercise may have an appetite suppressant effect.10
• Those subjects who exercise during and after weight reduction are better able to maintain the weight loss than those who do not exercise.46
The concept of "spot reduction" is a myth.47 Exercise draws from all of the fat stores of the body, not just from local deposits. While aerobic exercise generally enhances weight loss programs, weight training programs can also substantially alter body composition, by increasing lean body weight and decreasing body fat. |

Hydroxycitrate (HCA or Garcinia)
Hydrocitric acid (HCA), also called garcinia, is a natural appetite suppressant and thermogenic agent that slows down the production of fat from the metabolism of carbohydrates and proteins. HCA enhances the ability of the liver and muscles to store glycogen, thereby reducing fat production and diminishing appetite. Animal studies have shown that HCA can suppress fat production by 40 to 80 percent for 8 to 12 hours after eating. Human studies have also confirmed that people eat less and store less body fat after taking HCA. |

The other was the non-amphetamine appetite suppressant phentermine, which was sold under several names by several companies but was best known as SmithKline Beecham's product Fastin. Weintraub studied the combined drugs in 121 obese patients, mostly women, and the average study patient of over 200 pounds successfully dropped thirty of them. This result proved to be more interesting to him than to the major medical journals, so the paper ended up being published in July 1992 in the leading journal for drug experts, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. |

Employed also as a bulk laxative, appetite suppressant, and to treat peptic ulcers. The FDA's reevaluation in 1976 found guar gum to be GRAS if used as a stabilizer, thickener, and firming agent at .35 percent in baked goods, 1.2 percent in breakfast cereals, 2 percent in fats and oils, 1.2 percent in gravies, 1 percent in sweet sauces, toppings, and syrups, and 2 percent in processed vegetables and vegetable juices. In large amounts, it may cause nausea, flatulence, or abdominal cramps. |

It also has a mild appetite suppressant action, according to Dr. Birdsall. The effects of ephedrine can be enhanced by caffeine, theophylline (a white, crystalline alkaloid derived from tea), and aspirin.66 These preparations offer a way to burn excess fat in patients with thermogenic deficiencies.
Many people, however, will experience side effects like irritabflity, anxiety, insomnia, hyperactivity, rapid heart rate, and increased blood pressure. Used alone, ephedra can lead to rapid weight loss, but the pounds usually return once the herb is discontinued. |

Tyrosine may stimulate growth hormone and can act as a mild appetite suppressant. It may also be useful in the control of anxiety or depression. Tyrosine is known as the "antidepressant" amino acid. It has a mild antioxidant effect, binding up free radicals (unstable molecules) that can cause damage to the cells and tissues, and is useful in smokers, people with stressful lives, or those exposed to chemicals and radiation. L-tyrosine has also been used, usually in a dose of 1-2 grams a day, for low sex drive, Parkinson's disease, and in programs for drug problems or weight loss. |
