| It has long been a popular weight-loss product, which has been marketed as a diuretic and appetite suppressant, and believed to help prevent or reduce fatty deposits and cellulite. Several years ago, an enterprising Brazilian company re-launched a cha de bugre weight-loss product, calling it by its Indian name, porangaba, and market demand in Brazil has been fierce ever since. Dr. G.L. Cruz in his book, Dictionary of the Plants Used in Brazil, recommends cha de bugre as an excellent diuretic and weight-loss aid as well as a good general heart tonic, which can help stimulate circulation. |

At about the same time, a new appetite suppressant, dexfenfluramine (Redux), was approved. It, too, was associated with heart problems and a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary hypertension.
In 1997, the FDA asked the manufacturer to withdraw Redux from the market, although it had been approved only the year before. Fenfluramine was also taken off the market. The fen-phen fiasco was certainly a spectacular disaster. Quite a number of people were left with damaged hearts just because they took drugs to help them lose weight. |
| Those using the drug as an appetite suppressant appeared to be at 16 times the stroke risk of a woman not taking the drug.838
Given these data, FDA staffers estimated that PPA might be responsible for 200 to 500 strokes in people under the age of 50 each year. Extrapolating over all the years it was on the market, PPA could have accounted for as many as 10,000 strokes in people who otherwise would not have been vulnerable to that problem. The agency announced in 2000 that OTC weight loss products would need to be reformulated without PPA. |

Here's why: It acts as a natural appetite suppressant, since it helps the body convert excess glucose to glycogen, which sends the "full" signal to the brain (Marion). Studies show that HCA supplements, an isolated and trademarked herbal extract from Garcinia, reduce the quantity of food people eat by almost 10 percent (Goldberg).
Guarana: Obtains its stimulant effects from the caffeine-like alkaloid guaranine, and two closely related alkaloids called theobromine and theophylline. |

Until then, hoodia gordonii seems to be your best appetite suppressant (and, in fact, it may turn out to be the best choice even after these other drugs are released).
Finally, I'd like to add that if you're not engaging in regular physical exercise, there's no way you'll lose weight, no matter what supplement you're taking. So don't turn to hoodia, PYY nasal spray or any other diet pills and expect to drop the pounds without getting into a regular exercise routine. Take responsibility for your actions, and don't make the mistake of thinking that you'll lose weight without physical exercise. |

Key factors include diet and supplementation, exposure to natural sunlight -- which is a natural appetite suppressant -- and the avoidance of all metabolic disrupters. Metabolic disruptors are ingredients in the food supply. I reveal them all in the book Grocery Warning, where I talk about them in great detail. The main ones to avoid are the excitotoxins, which include monosodium glutamate, yeast extract and other variations of this chemical. If you do that, you don't need bariatric surgery. You'll lose weight as a side effect of making healthy food choices. |

If you want a body that's fit, trim and healthy, it's going to take a whole lot more than swallowing some appetite suppressant pills. See my own pics if you're curious: I lost weight the hard way, the honest way. I gave up all soft drinks, sugars, bread, dairy products and white flour. I exercised regularly, got plenty of natural sunlight, and drank lots of water. I engaged in heavy nutritional supplementation and remineralization (both the macro minerals like calcium and magnesium, plus trace minerals). Over time, I lost 50 pounds of body fat and have kept it off for years. |

The bottom line is that genuine hoodia, if you can find it, seems to help as an appetite suppressant and at the very least holds promise for future research into weight loss supplements. But beware, because if you're buying hoodia retail or even from honest-looking companies online, you're probably not getting genuine hoodia.
And finally, as I've always said, there's no such thing as a magic pill that's going to cause you to lose weight without changing your diet (eliminating high-glycemic, processed foods) and engaging in regular physical exercise. |

The next ingredient is citrus naringin, which is a citrus extract occasionally used as an appetite suppressant, but is probably better known as a source of fiber. This acts in combination with the glucomannan and the sodium carboxymethylcellulose to provide a complex fiber that makes you feel full while interfering with the absorption of refined carbohydrates.
Next, we have two ingredients that are present in only small amounts -- these are chromium and vanadium, and these I think are another excellent choice for the Trim Spa recipe. |

The FDA approved the prescription appetite suppressant phentermine for single-drug, short-term"a few weeks" treatment for obesity in 1959. And in 1973 the FDA also approved fenfluramine as a single drug, with short-term use as a prescription appetite suppressant.)1
Patients literally flocked into my office wanting to be placed on the Fen-Phen drug program for weight loss. They all claimed to have friends or family members who had successfully lost weight using these drugs, - and they wanted to try them, too. |

Don't fall for the trap of trying to lose weight through dehydration and starvation, aided by an appetite suppressant herb. This can be medically dangerous. Drinking lots of water may make you feel bloated, but remember: water has no calories. Drink all you need. It won't add an ounce of fat, ever.
As always, be sure to work with a qualified health practitioner before attempting any weight loss program, exercise program, or dietary supplement (including hoodia). |
| In contrast, if you do take up a sensible exercise program, and you combine it with an effective appetite suppressant such as hoodia gordonii, your results are likely to be accelerated.
Healthy weight loss should never exceed two pounds of body fat per week. Any weight loss beyond that is likely to include loss of lean body mass (muscle) and skeletal mass (bone density). Most nutritionists recommend sustained weight loss of no more than 1-2 pounds of body fat per week.
Full hydration (drinking lots of water) during any weight loss effort is very important. |

I believe that hoodia holds potential for being a highly effective appetite suppressant. As I reported earlier in my own experiments with genuine hoodia, it did take the edge off the hunger, even though it wasn't a magic pill that just turned off hunger like a light switch. It could be quite valuable as part of an ongoing weight loss effort that includes high-density nutrition, avoidance of high-glycemic foods and a regular physical exercise program.
In fact, I think genuine hoodia gordonii could be more effective than prescription drugs for helping people lose weight. |

I suspect that the much-hyped PYY3-36 nasal spray, produced by a company called NasTech, might offer another realistic appetite suppressant solution. But that product is only in trials right now, and it won't even be available on the market for several years. It's also a drug, meaning you'd need a prescription, which makes it a lot more difficult to get than hoodia gordonii. So don't put any short-term hopes on the PYY nasal spray. Right now, hoodia gordonii is probably the best thing going. |

This story begins in mid-2004, when hoodia was appearing on the scene as an appetite suppressant. At that time, Truth Publishing purchased several hoodia products, conducted interviews, and began listing hoodia suppliers known to offer honest products. At the time, we were convinced this included Pure Hoodia, Inc. To further verify this, Truth Publishing attempted to locate laboratories in the U.S. that could conduct specimen authentication testing, but no such labs could be found (we called dozens). |
| Roots, unfortunately, have none of the active chemical constituents that give hoodia gordonii its appetite suppressant qualities.
Wild harvesting species that appear similar to hoodia, but are not hoodia. While this may allow the bulk ingredients to pass a simple microscopy test (because it all looks like succulent material under the microscope), it will not pass HPLC and TLC testing (chromatographic tests) that reveal the active chemical constituents of the sample. |

Eating For Weight Gain
How many obese animals do we see in Nature? Animals carry exactly the weight they need and no more. Every animal in Nature is at a perfect weight without exception. What is considered a normal weight by civilization's standards is actually an artificial weight created by a demineralized cooked-food diet. Your natural weight might be five to ten pounds (2.3 to 4.5 kg) lighter than what is recommended in the common body weight charts. |

Another obestity drug that has made it to market is Abbott's Meridia, an appetite suppressant. This is said to have had 34 deaths associated with it and been suspended in Italy,29 and calls for its withdrawal can be heard elsewhere.30 Because it can increase blood pressure and heart rate, it is in any case thought unsuitable for a range of problems people who are overweight often have, such as being at high risk of heart failure and stroke.
Many more drugs are in development, but expectations are frequently dashed. |

They are, in effect, preying upon the desperation of people who are trying to lose weight with hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant, and in doing so, they are discrediting the entire hoodia industry.
Furthermore, until Truth Publishing initiated this investigation, no consumer safety organization, nor the FTC, nor the FDA were working on putting a stop to this. Pure Hoodia likely could have continued selling bogus products to unsuspecting consumers for many months or years. |

Moderate to intense exercise may have an appetite suppressant effect. țIndividuals who exercise during and after weight reduction are better able to maintain the weight loss than those who do not exercise. țExercise helps diminish anxiety and reduces depressiontwo major factors that drive people to the refrigerator in their search for comfort.
While the immediate effect of exercise is stress on the body, with regular exercise the body adapts; it becomes stronger, functions more efficiently, and has greater endurance. The entire body benefits from regular exercise (see Table 5.1 |

REPPED: The popularity of hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant continues to skyrocket. I've had an increasing number of readers e-mailing me to ask about the herb and tell me about their experiences with it. And when I've talked to various retailers and suppliers of the herb, I've learned that demand is shooting through the roof. Let me give you an update on my impressions of hoodia, based on what I'm hearing from readers and users.
So far, the results are mixed. Some people are reporting that hoodia does absolutely nothing for them. |

Scientists have recently substantiated verbena's folk use as a diuretic, gout remedy, and appetite suppressant. In southern Europe verbena is recommended as a remedy for exhaustion and depression. Verbena corrects minor menstrual irregularities, has diuretic properties that eliminate edemas caused by cardiovascular disorders, and helps to treat inflammation of the spleen and liver. The dried leaves are used in sachets and potpourris, as well as in teas as a sedative or antipyretic. The oil is extensively used in perfumery. |
